That means that there are financial and human well-being-related costs that come of exposure to incivility at work.So how do you know if youre perpetuating incivility toward other women in the workplace? Inspiration from the Basement Inspiration from the Basement Mother Nature has inspired engineers in their work for years. The quickness of the cheetah, the flight of a bird, but the cricket? I was working in bioinspired locomotion and Ive always been interested in understanding locomotion with an engineering perspective and using high-speed videography and computational modeling, explains Rajat Mittal, professor of engineering at Johns Hopkins University. But, believe or not, he didnt start out thinking crickets would be a subject of study. Annoyance to Analysis You see, in some areas of the Northeast, especially where Mittal lives, basements have been overrun by crickets, he says. Ive had this problem and, as a homeowner, I was trying to figure out how to get rid of them. But I started looking at these crickets and they are incredible when it comes to jumping. Theyre jumping several meters and its something like fifty to sixty times the length of their body. When they jump, you see how they do it in relation to landing on their feet and it looked controlled. That was the genesis of this project: Are these animals doing something interesting to stabilize themselves in the air? Image: Johns Hopkins University Using high-speed video, there were 100 to 200 frames that basically covered the entire jump. The high-speed video system contained three cameras to get a view of the same area from three different directions. Building an acrylic enclosure, they jumped in the enclosure and the bottom surface had sandpaper for traction for the landing. Mittal said the hypothesis was that the configuration of the crickets body would turn out to be aerodynamically stable. In the end, it was found that the cricket minimizes drag and, about 30-40% of the way through they jump, they quickly transition from drag-minimizing confirmation, to aerodynamic stabilizing. They do this within a jump that would be the equivalent of a human jumping about the length of a football field and its completed in less than half of a second. Jumping Robots One question was if these principals of aerodynamic stabilization could be streamlined to build very small-scale robots, he says. They could be potentially used in complicated domains, he says. Jumping in many situations can just be a more effective mode of locomotion than crawling or flying. Lets say its a disaster earthquake situation or a fire search and rescue is ongoing. You might have people gathered in rubble, there are nooks and crannies possibly involved, and crawling robots would have a tough time getting over very jagged debris and rocks and the broken terrain. Flying robots take up a lot of energy and they may only have limited juice. But jumping robots could both potentially avoid getting stuck and also get to the areas you need. For Mittal, the work to this point has been extremely gratifying, with his team including undergraduate students and a high school student. Bad Resume Example Bad Resume Example If you’ve been preparing for your job search by reading up on the do’s and don’t of resumes and applications, you’ve probably come across plenty of resources that talk about just what a great resume looks like.  Strong formatting, plenty of organization and inclusion of all of your relevant work history and experience are all musts. What you don’t see often, however, are those examples of truly horrible, awful, just plain old bad resumes. This typical omission from most advice columns is a shame, as it’s the poorly done forms that can often provide us the best feedback in what not to do. With that in mind, read on for a prime “Bad Resume” example and corresponding explanations on just what you can do to avoid making the same mistakes. The Bad Resume: John Doe johnlikestoparty@email.com Objective I want to be sucessful and move up in my career to make a lot of money. Experience Salesperson, TV Depot, Los Angeles, California Hired and managed employees Managed inventory Customer service Education USC Class of 2016 Los Angeles, CA Bachelor Degree GPA 2.0 Uni High Class of 1999 High school Diploma Hobbies Skiing, swimming, archery, traveling References Available Upon Request The Bad Resume Breakdown Even the most novice among us can probably spot one or two cringe-worthy moments in John “He Didn’t Really Just Write That, Did He?” Doe’s resume, but can you spot them all?  Here’s a breakdown of the numerous mistakes organized by section. Resume Header Not only is the resume header uninspiring from a design aspect, it also lacks relevant contact details.  Your header will be the first and most accessible piece of information on any resume. Be sure it contains your name, address, phone number and email contact details. In addition, John’s “likes to party” email may have been cute with his fraternity friends in college, but is completely unprofessional and out of place in a work environment.  Don’t be like John and stick to emails in formats such as “JohnDoe@gmail.com” to avoid making the wrong impression. Objective As we’ve covered in the past, if you do opt to include an objective statement it should be succinct, relevant and help the interviewer or hiring manager understand your goals and motivation for applying for the specific position.  An improvement on this “bad” objective statement could look something like: To use my experience as a sales manager and knowledge gained through my bachelor’s degree in marketing to earn a marketing job from a major electronics development company. Also, did anyone catch the misspelling in the word “successful”?  Typos in a resume are a major red flag for an employer and are inexcusable for anyone with spell check or that professes to have superior “attention to detail” skills. Experience Listing your prior job responsibilities in the experience portion of your resume isn’t an effective method for communication just why you’re the right candidate for the position.  Be sure to use active sentences and highlight your relevant accomplishments. A great example of better wording here would have been: “Effectively managed team of team of salespeople resulting in exceeding sales goals for 12 months running.” Education Where to begin on this section?  While your education background is important, it shouldn’t be the focus of your CV, especially if you have less than stellar results to show from your endeavors.  Here are a few areas where this resume was particularly bad: If you choose to use abbreviations in your resume, be sure they are standard across your resume.  Best practice would be to avoid these altogether and write out items such as your university name (the University of Southern California instead of USC). If your GPA isn’t going to make the grade, it’s best to leave it off entirely.  A 2.0 conveys to your employer that you had better things to do than study during your educational career.  Instead of a GPA, simply list your degree attained and move along. Unless it’s your highest level of education, the name of your high school, or the fact that you obtained a diploma, isn’t relevant and shouldn’t be included on your resume. Hobbies Hobbies are a much-contested area when it comes to specifics on your resume.  The general rule of thumb in today’s modern job market is that if it isn’t relevant to your profession or the position you’re applying for, exclude them.  Instead, focus on professional certifications or list out community service activities you participate in to show an extra level of involvement and dedication. References Most modern hiring managers know that if they want to see your references they should ask the individual candidate.  Including the tired “references available upon request” line takes up valuable resume space that could be used for extolling your virtues as a candidate. Overall Takeaways A resume should be short, informative snapshots of your skills and experience.  Irrelevant or unprofessional information should be avoided at all costs and beware of typos.  Give your resume one or more proofreads before hitting send and consider asking a trusted friend or advisor to take a second look.  You only get one chance to make a great first impression so be sure a bad resume doesn’t tank your chances at scoring that job or career.

Both groups of students were presented with two different studies one provided data in support of the death penalty; the other presented facts that questioned it.Those students who favored capital punishment found the pro-deterrence study highly credible and the other unconvincing. The other group reacted precisely in the opposite way. At the end of the experiment, not only none of the students changed their minds, but both groups were more passionate about their original position.Our brain manipulates our perception we are immune to facts.‘Confirmation Bias’ is th e tendency we have to embrace information that supports our beliefs and to reject the one that jeopardizes them.As magician Penn Jillette says, “If there’s something you really want to believe, that’s what you should question the most.”There are many types of faulty thinking. We tend to think we are smarter than we actually are. And underestimate any logic that doesn’t match ours.“Error Blindness” is a term coined by self-defined wrongologist Kathryn Schulz. She believes that “we don’t have an internal cue to know we are wrong about something until it’s too late.”As she explains in this TED Talk, this delusional mindset goes through three different phases.First, we are wrong but don’t realize it yet. We feel over-confident because we assume we own the truth. Thus, failing to double check facts. Second, we acknowledge we are wrong either by introspection or because new evidence is introduced. We feel vulnerable and under siege. Lastly, we become defensive and feel under attack. We end denying being wrong.We prefer to stand our ground even if, deep inside, we know we are wrong.In the book, The Knowledge Illusion, cognitive scientists Steven Sloman and Philip Fernbach argue that we survive and thrive despite our mental shortcomings the key to our intelligence lies in other people’s knowledge, not ours.The authors cite a Yale study in which undergraduate students had to rate their understanding of everyday products such as toilets, zippers, etc. everyone gives themselves a generous score. Then, they were also asked to describe, step-by-step, how those devices work. When requested to rate themselves again, the self-assessments dropped. The experience revealed to the students their own ignorance. Zippers and toilets, it seems, are more complicated than most of us think.The same happened with an experiment performed by Rebecca Lawson, a psychologist at the University of Liverpool. She showed a group of students a schematic drawing of a bicyc le that was missing several parts. When asked where the chain or the pedals should go, most students were confident everyone thought they knew the right answer.However, as you can see in the drawings below, most participants were clueless about how bikes work.Sloman and Fernbach call this effect the “illusion of explanatory depth” we all believe we know way more than we actually do.The problem is not our ignorance, but that we are used to hiding it. When someone judges our team unfairly, we get upset. But when the same thing happens to the other side, we feel that justice has been made. For example, if a referee awards a penalty to our team, we start looking for reasons why he is wrong. But when the opponent team is penalized, we celebrate the penalty!As Julia Galef says, “Our judgment is strongly influenced, unconsciously, by which side we want to win. And this is ubiquitous. This shapes how we think about our health, our relationships, how we decide how to vote, what we consider fair or ethical.”The soldier mindset is rooted in the need to defend ourselves.
